Lower Your Risk of Liver Cancer With 4 Changes

By Brandi Goodman

Liver Cancer Awareness Month falls to October. Liver disease and related cancer types have been growing in numbers in recent years. Poor diet, lack of exercise, alcohol consumption, and more can contribute. Now is the time to learn about lowering your risk and how to make appropriate changes that can help.

Improve Your Diet

The foods you eat play a role in your health. You should improve your diet if you hope to reduce your risk of developing liver and other cancers. Skip foods with lots of fat and don't eat salt or sugar. Instead, you want to focus on fiber. Vegetables, whole grains, and fruits are going to help your liver function at optimal levels. Make sure you're paying attention to the nutrition labels. Watch your choices when eating at restaurants as well.

Get More Exercise

Remaining sedentary most of the time does not allow your body to function optimally. Your body needs movement and exercise in order to burn calories, get your metabolism to work better, and get blood and oxygen flowing. It will also help with fatty acid oxidation, which is necessary to improve liver function. Get more exercise if you hope to get your liver into better shape.

Lower Your Weight

Eating right and getting more exercise should help you to lower your weight. If you're making those changes and still seem to be keeping those pesky pounds on, then it may be necessary to speak to your doctor. Stress could also be playing a factor in why your weight is staying on despite your best efforts. Getting more sleep at night and finding some coping mechanisms for stress can help.

Avoid Alcohol Consumption

Alcohol greatly impacts the liver. The more of it you drink, the more your chances increase of developing liver problems and other serious health concerns. Avoid alcohol consumption as much as possible. It may be fine to have one drink here and there, but you should truly be choosing water as your drink of choice day or night, at home or out.

Liver Cancer Awareness Month is not the only time you should consider your health. Use it as a starting point for making healthy changes and then continue living that lifestyle thereafter. You want to be as well as possible to lower your risks for cancers and disease.
