5 Healthy Habits to Change the Whole Year
By Sandy Schroeder
As the New Year rolls ahead, most of us have a little nag list building in our heads, but why not skip all of the resolutions and just adopt a few new habits that might change everything.
DumbLittleMan.com poses the question and offers five healthy habits that could make a change in the whole year.
Pick a new hobby or learn a new skill - If you have always wanted to play the guitar, or paint a sunset, now may be the time to do just that. Pull together the instrument, lessons, or classes, and enjoy the regular stress release as you step out of your regular routine. Better yet, invite your spouse or kids to join you.
Get moving and keep moving - We all know sitting too much is unhealthy. Finding ways to stay active every day is the challenge. Pick things that you really enjoy like running, biking or hiking, and make them happen. Get up a little earlier to do a morning run or finish off the day with a walk to the park with your kids. Enjoy more energy, better sleep and a lighter spirit with every step.
Put electronics on pause - From the moment we get up to the last tasks at night, electronics manage to command our attention. Find ways to put phones and laptops on pause at least two hours before you go to bed to rest better. Whip up a supper for family and friends and shut down electronics to just sit and talk. Take weekends off, just checking in at specific times for updates, leaving the rest of the time blissfully free to enjoy the outdoors, and spend time with all of your favorite people.
Make room for family and friends - It can be all too easy to let special times slip away as we power through projects and deadlines. Book family dates and lunches with friends into your schedule. Find ways to delegate tasks, or shift schedules around to leave room for family dinners and weekend outings. Kids grow up before you know it. Make sure you don't miss any of the memories.
Remember how gratitude works - When too many things happen all at once, it is easy to grumble, but a quick look around will tell you how much there is to be thankful for. One couple that I know posted a whiteboard in their bathroom to say what they were most thankful for about their spouse. They are one of the happiest couples that I know.
