Time for Some Activity Upgrades

By Sandy Schroeder

As we look ahead, it may be time to rethink our activities. Many of us have used walking and biking to stay active, but now we can start thinking of the future with more gym time or yoga and tai chi classes. As the future takes shape, we may want to go further with a barre ballet class, a fast moving dance session, or a visit to a rock climbing gym.

How to Make It All Work

Enjoy every minute as you expand your horizons.

Set some goals - Is this the time to shed 10 pounds, add some muscle or regain your flexibility? Hopefully, we will all sit less and move more and upgrade our bodies in the process.

Remind yourself of the rewards - Lowered blood pressure, less weight, and more energy are all great payoffs when you start to exercise more. A stronger heart and less risk for diabetes or stroke will show up too when we are more active.

Get everyone involved - Being at home most of the time may have created separate grooves for us, but now is the time to come together and start doing more things that we enjoy. Being more active and supporting each other in the effort would be a good start.

Make the most of weekends - Before the pandemic your family and friends may have enjoyed barbecues at home or picnics in the park. Or maybe you hit the bicycle paths, went on wilderness hikes or spent some time on the water. Now's the time to activate all of your favorites.

Fit exercise into your schedule - More activity requires more muscle which means you should add five-minute stretch breaks to each hour of sitting or get up an hour early to do walks and runs. Choose the most logical spots and insert exercise wherever you can into your schedule

Plan some summer trips - Set aside some time to do a family brainstorm of where you might like to be this summer. Make a priority list with everybody contributing their chosen spots. Then pick a few and start doing the research with time estimates, maps and target dates.

Try a few new sports - This may be the time to teach a child how to shoot hoops, kick a soccer ball or play tennis. You might want to use kayaks or canoes, spend some time fishing, or start photographing nature and collecting rocks.

Get outdoors and get going - Whatever ways you choose to be more activity, make sure you spend quite a bit of the time outdoors. Fresh air, sunshine and spring breezes should be just right this year. Enjoy!
