Healthy Behaviors for Healthy Futures

By Donna Stark

My daughter often gets compared to me. Many of our friends have commented how our behaviors, speech, and appearance are eerily similar to each other. Some have even said, “the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree.” I think that is a pretty typical response when children are compared to their parents. I hear it all the time, for both good and bad situations. And it’s true. Children emulate the ones who are raising them. They hold onto the behaviors, thoughts, and actions from those they live with. So it’s extremely important that parents teach and model healthy, lifelong habits to their children.

Healthy Habits for Children to Thrive

It is critical to instill healthy habits and behaviors in your child at a young age because they will continue to follow them throughout their entire life. Here are just a few suggestions.

  • Surviving boredom - Our children are constantly being bombarded with different forms of entertainment, or as I like to call it, distractions, and the parents are falling into that trap as well. Many feel like it’s their job to constantly entertain their kiddos. But allowing them to be bored and to find something to do on their own helps to foster creativity and imagination. Let your children find their own entertainment … away from their phones. Not only will they learn more about themselves, but they may even look up from their devices and explore the world around them.
  • Staying physically active - Our lives are becoming more sedentary with each passing day. Teaching your child the importance of physical activity from the moment they are young is vital for their future health and fitness. So make sure your child is unplugging, not only from the television, phone, and gaming system, but also from the hours of homework they may be tied to. All it takes is a 15-minute walk each night.
  • Cleaning up - This may be a tall task, but oh how wonderful it is if and when you find success. Teaching your child how to clean up after themselves is great, but teaching them how to do it so well that it would be hard to prove they were even in the room is even better. Learning how to straighten up as you go will save your child a lot of time and stress in their future.
  • Healthy eating - Fostering a healthy love for food is important as well. Teach your child how to make healthy choices at the grocery store and when eating out; introduce them to new foods, new tastes, and new textures, and guide them in the kitchen so they can prepare a healthy meal when they are older.

Creating new behaviors and lifelong habits doesn’t happen overnight … actually very little happens overnight with some of our kids. But the time and dedication that you put into it will be well worth it in the end.
