Resolutions Not Working? Don't Worry!
By Donna Stark
It's easy to get excited about your New Year's resolutions and to jump right in to a healthier lifestyle, but if that bang you started with has long but fizzled away, you may need to reevaluate your goals. New Year's resolutions can be like that sometimes, can't they? And it's not for a lack of excitement or desire to change on your part. It could just be that your excitement doesn't match what is realistic for your body or your life at the moment. And that's OK. But don't misinterpret what is going on because it's not a sign to give up, it's just your body telling you a different approach is needed.
Scaling Back and Modifying Your Resolutions
New Year's resolutions are all about change, but if the changes you want to make are too big or too quick, then you may find yourself struggling to find success. The important thing to remember though, is you don't need a big party and a change in calendars to improve your life. If, after several weeks you are finding it difficult to reach any of your goals, don't worry! You can start all over from scratch again if you have to. Take a look at some simple changes that can get you back on track.
- Forget the diets - Bouncing from diet to diet rarely does any good, so try something different instead. Focus on eating nutrient-dense foods and watch how much food you consume. By eating whole, natural foods and cutting the portion size of your meals, it may be easier to maintain a healthier weight.
- Exercise daily - Are you starting to believe those fitness goals you set for yourself are too far out of reach? Well, maybe they are, or maybe you just need a more realistic time frame to reach them. Give yourself some grace and cut back on the hours you spend at the gym each night. Getting burned out too soon won't be of any help and could actually do more damage than good.
- Prioritize sleep - There are a lot of things on your list of priorities, but if sleep isn't one of them, you may find yourself struggling to get any of them done. Inadequate sleep can lead to serious health issues, poor work performance, and damaged relationships, so be very intentional with getting the amount that you need.
A Fresh Start
Starting over with a fresh start to your New Year's resolutions may end up being exactly what you need to do to find the success you are looking for. So don't stress about it! Stay positive and make this year a great one!
