Winter Fruits to the Rescue!
By Donna Stark
Boosting the body's immunity is on the minds of everyone these days and rightfully so. Fortunately, there is an easy (and delicious) way to do it. All that's required is some extra color in your life, color that comes from winter citrus! Winter citrus? Is that even a thing? You bet it is! From Meyer lemons to mandarins to kumquats, there are plenty of ways you can add extra vitamins and nutrients to your diet. Ready to get started? Take a look at just a few of these amazing options below.
Meyer Lemons
Meyer lemons are a cross between a regular lemon and a mandarin orange. They have smooth, beautiful skin, an edible rind, and so much juice that you may need to see it to actually believe it! Meyer lemons are so easy to add to your diet too. Cut them into slices and roast them with your root vegetables, squeeze the juice over fish and salads, grate the zest over rice or vegetables, or satisfy your sweet tooth and make a decadent dessert for all to enjoy!
Kumquats
No bigger than an olive, kumquats are the perfect snack to grab and go! They are especially easy to eat because you don't need to peel the skin off at all. Just pop them in your mouth and get ready for the explosion of antioxidants and nutrients that will help to boost your immune system. Or you can get really creative in the kitchen and use them for marmalades, salad toppings, and chutneys.
Cara Cara Navel Oranges
Cara Caras are a cross between two navel oranges and have a sweet, slightly tangy taste, but what really sets them apart from the "regular" oranges you may be used to, is that they are completely seedless (and who doesn't love that?)! You can enjoy Cara Caras in the same way you do with those other oranges you buy. Start your day with a freshly-squeezed glass of juice, peel and eat in sections, blend them into your smoothies, or toss them on top of your salads. It doesn't matter how you eat them, just do it!
Grapefruits
If you like a little bit of tart to go with your sweet, try including some grapefruit to your diet. Whether you cut it in half and eat it with a spoon, peel the skin and tear into sections, or squeeze the life out of it to enjoy a glass of juice, grapefruits are an excellent way to increase your intake of Vitamin C and boost your immune system.
Winter Citrus Benefits
Winter citrus may very well be one of the best sources of immunity-boosting vitamins and nutrients, so start filling your kitchen with these amazing fruits as soon as you can! You can't beat their benefits!
