Chiropractic Tips for a Healthy Summer

It's summer and you know what that means! Outdoor activities galore, hot weather, lots of sweat, and maybe a vacation or two. Summer is great because it tends to get people out and get them active. While that's fantastic for overall health and wellness, it can be a shock to the system if you've been sitting around all winter. That's where the chiropractor comes in. Here are a few tips from the chiropractors at The Joint Chiropractic to help you stay healthy and pain-free this summer.

Stay Hydrated

Hydration is important for your overall health in the summer since it helps your body to work optimally, even in the hot weather. But staying hydrated is also important for the health of your spine.

The bones in your spine, or vertebrae, are cushioned by spinal discs. These discs must be properly hydrated in order to do their job and allow your spine to function at its best. So, make sure to drink plenty of water, at least half your body weight in ounces, each day this summer -- maybe a little more if you're out in the hot sun and losing fluids through sweat.


When the weather outside isn't so great, people tend to make a lot of excuses for why they don't get more movement into their day. Now that it's summer, that excuse no longer works! Take a bike ride, go on a hike, walk around your neighborhood before dinner -- it doesn't matter what you do as long as you get out and get your body moving for at least 20 to 30 minutes per day. It's good for your health and the health of your spine!

Don't Forget Your Feet

Summer seems to go hand-in-hand with flip-flops, but it's worth mentioning that while these shoes are comfortable, they are not foot-friendly. Wearing shoes that offer no arch support places added stress on your knees and hips. They also encourage poor posture, making them terrible for your back too!

When choosing shoes this summer, opt for shoes that offer firm arch support, good traction, and a thick sole. If you can find flip-flops that offer those things, the more power to you, but don't buy a pair for a dollar and think it's doing anything but bad things for your body!
