How You Can Practice Yoga at Home

By Sara Butler

Yoga is an awesome practice because it’s good for your body and your mind. If you’re not ready to jump head-first into a class, you can begin practicing yoga in your own home. In fact, it might be a good idea for even the most seasoned yogis to create their own space in their home dedicated to yoga practice. Here are a few tips to help you get started!

Create the Space

You must create an environment at home that will allow you to totally relax and get a little peace and quiet. Look for an area or room of your home where you won’t be disturbed. This could be a corner of your bedroom, part of your office, or even the laundry room. You can get creative!

You also need a good yoga mat for practice. Make sure to choose one that feels good on your hands and feet and won’t slip. Then decorate the space with things that help you to relax. Perhaps some plants, photos, or other things that inspire calm. You may want to invest in an essential oil diffuser too, since it can further help with relaxation. The space can be as simple as you want as long as it makes you feel comfortable.

Stay Safe

One thing that’s important to remember while practicing yoga at home is to prioritize your safety. Always respect your own boundaries and understand the ways in which you can injure yourself. Pay special attention to your knees, spine, neck, and hips, since these areas are the most vulnerable to injury. If you feel even the slightest pain, you should adjust and come out of the pose -- don’t push yourself or force it.

Make sure to warm up properly too, especially for more advanced poses. Be mindful of what you’re doing, especially during transitions from one pose to another and when moving in and out of poses.

Practice Regularly

Once you decide what type of yoga you want to do after exploring online videos or reading books, make sure to practice yoga at least once a week, even though three or more times a week is more ideal. Regular practice doesn’t have to be physically exhausting. If you need to simply do some deep breathing with a few restorative poses, then that is what you should do!

Creating a place in your home to practice yoga is a great idea to help you reap the benefits of yoga when you can't make it to the studio!
