Tips to Achieve Your Goals
By Randi Morse
It can be extremely frustrating to set goals and not achieve them. Failing to achieve your goals may not be your fault. There is a proper way to set goals, a way that makes achieving your goals much easier and more streamlined.
Set Specific Goals
It's easy to say something like, "I want to lose weight." Making this statement seems like you're setting a goal, but it's such a vague goal that the amount of commitment that you have toward the goal is likely going to be far too low. Instead of setting vague goals, set specific goals. So instead of saying "I want to lose weight," you'd say something like, "I'm going to lose 10 pounds in 30 days." This gives you a very specific target goal which is much easier to focus on.
Write it Down
Goals are much stronger if you write them down, especially if you put your list of goals up in a place where you're going to see it every day. Great examples of easily visible places include:
- Refrigerator
- Kitchen cupboard door
- Bathroom mirror
- Closet door
- On your desk
If you have your list of goals easily visible the goals will never be out of your thoughts, making it easier to achieve them. Don't hesitate to make multiple copies of your goals so that you can leave them in multiple locations, like having one list at home and having another list at work.
Big Goals and Small Goals
Big goals, like buying a house, are great to strive for, but they can take a long time to achieve and that can lead to depression and a lack of desire to complete your goals. Make a list of small goals and big goals. When you achieve the small goals, cross them off of your list. It will make you feel proud and will keep you motivated.
Realistic Goals
If you've been a couch potato for the past three years, don't set a goal that you'll be able to run a marathon in a month. Setting unrealistic goals sets you up for failure. Instead, set reasonable, manageable goals. You wouldn't expect to be the CEO of a large company right after you've graduated from college, but you can set a goal to get a job at your company of choice and work to climb the corporate ladder.
