Get Crazy About Cabbage and Benefit

By Brandi Swieter

Cabbage isn't often included in a list of top favorite foods. However, the vegetable is in the family of leafy greens that provide lots of nutrition to those who consume them regularly. People should get crazy about cabbage and eat it more often if they want to gain the numerous benefits the veggie provides.

Ideal for Weight Loss

Because cabbage only contains a little more than 20 calories in a full cup, the food is ideal for weight loss. People can eat the stuff plain with their salad, cooked, or added to a dish and barely add any calories to their daily count. Anyone hoping to watch their weight can feel fine eating this food.

Provides Lots of Vitamin K

Vitamins are essential to the proper functioning of the body. In the case of Vitamin K, proteins can function correctly with enough of a supply. Cabbage contains lots of Vitamin K. In fact, just one cup of it provides around 85 percent of the daily recommended value.

Offers Vitamin C in Excess

Vitamin C is extremely beneficial to the body. It helps to keep the body healthy and well, preventing illness and disease. The vitamin works to boost the immune system and repair tissues. One cup of cabbage offers 54 percent of the recommended daily amount.

A Mix of Other Nutrients

Though Vitamin C and Vitamin K come in the largest doses in cabbage, there are still other nutrients provided as well. One cup of the vegetable contains at least 6 percent of Vitamin B-6, 7 percent of manganese, and 4 percent each of calcium and potassium. Each of these are responsible for an important function within the body and will help to enhance strength and energy.

Reduces Inflammation

One of the biggest benefits of cabbage is the fact that it reduces inflammation within the body. Cabbage contains antioxidants that help to keep inflamed areas from feeling symptoms. Over time, eating enough vegetables in this family can even reduce blood markers in the body that indicate inflammation. This will help to reduce some symptoms of pain and swelling.

Leafy greens in general provide nutrition to those who consume them. Cabbage is no exception. The vegetable provides lots of vitamins and nutrients that people need to maintain a healthy mind and body. Anyone hoping to improve their health should start by adding cabbage and other vegetables to the weekly menu.
