Fashion Faux Pas as Told By the Chiropractor

By Brandi Goodman

Clothes aren't just for fashion. They can actually have a big impact on your well-being. Chiropractors know firsthand how some fashion faux pas can lead to problems.

Skip Sandals and Flats

You shouldn't be wearing flat shoes or sandals. They have no support and will have your legs and feet taking all of the force as they hit the ground. Athletic shoes help to absorb some of the shock and keep your lower body feeling fine. Even on hot days, you should stick with tennis shoes instead of anything open-toed.

Say No to High Heels

High heels are even worse for your body. You're putting your feet at an awkward angle and putting extra pressure on your spine in the process. Even if you learn to walk well in them, high heels still throw off your balance a great deal and make your body work harder than necessary. You should skip high heels altogether if you want to avoid the discomfort that comes with them.

Keep the Back on Your Shoes

Backless shoes are also a possible footwear choice that should be avoided. They may seem fine as long as they're still in the shape of tennis shoes, but this type can also affect the way you walk. Your heel is uncovered, which can make you walk differently and lead to muscle strain and tension. You should keep the backs on your shoes so you can avoid this problem.

Avoid Tight Clothing

Whether you're trying to wear a corset under your dress that cinches in your waist, or put on a pair of skinny jeans that keeps your legs looking lean, you should really avoid all of it. Tight clothing may seem to work well for your appearance, but it does your body no favors. It will be more difficult to stand, sit, walk, or do anything comfortably without affecting your posture. You may find yourself needing to sit to the side or slouch slightly to get the item to feel comfortable enough. Clothes that fit well -- not too tight or loose, are the better option to prevent pain.

Plenty of fashion faux pas are present in the world according to chiropractors. So many of the items we wear can actually throw off our balance and posture and force our bodies to work harder. Keep these items out of your closet and stick with clothes that make you feel comfortable. Your back and body will thank you for it.
