Chiropractic Flying Tips
By Sara Butler
You can’t take your chiropractor with you everywhere you go, but you can take the knowledge they impart on you! If you’re going to fly soon for business or for pleasure, there are some tips you can use from the chiropractors at The Joint to help care for your spine and help you stay pain-free. Remember, flying can be difficult on your back, especially if you suffer from back pain or other musculoskeletal problems. Here are a few tips to help you fly high!
Choose a Short Flight
The less time you spend sitting, the better. While it may seem like a good idea to just fly direct on very long flights, you may want to intentionally break it up with layovers. Of course, there will be times that you have no choice but to be on a plane for hours on end (have you ever been to Australia? Jeesh!). But if you can avoid a super long flight to get where you’re going, you should.
Take an Aisle Seat
Some airlines allow you to pick your own seat or pay more for the privilege of choosing a seat before the other plebes on the plane, but you have to do what you have to do in order to make sure you get an aisle seat. If you need to get a letter from your chiropractor to ensure you get an aisle seat due to a medical condition, ask. This may help you, especially if you have chronic issues with back pain.
Take a Pillow
There are special travel pillows you can purchase that wrap around your neck to offer support when flying. You may also want to invest in a back roll to help with lower back pain. Buy them and take them with you when you travel, but make sure to test it before you leave. That way you can return or exchange anything that doesn’t quite offer the support you need. Don’t hesitate to ask the chiropractor for some suggestions!
Get an Adjustment
Probably one of the best things you can do before you go is to see the chiropractor for an adjustment! They can work with you to eliminate pain that may be caused by joint dysfunctions or restrictions so that you’re in the best shape possible before you take off!
