Wise Habits to Cultivate in 2018
By Sandy Schroeder
The New Year invites us to start fresh and break new ground. That leads to resolutions that briefly stick, but this may be the year to cultivate new habits to produce new fruit.
If you think it’s worth a shot, here are some “growing tips” from Albert Einstein and Mark Twain.
Be honest - Mark Twain said, “If you tell the truth, you don't have to remember anything.” Most of us complicate our lives when we dance around the truth to shield feelings or cover our tracks. As a life habit, sticking with the truth is actually one of the best ways to live well and enjoy your efforts.
Keep moving – Albert Einstein said, “Life is like riding a bicycle. To keep your balance you have to keep moving.” Making life work at every level usually means staying active and giving it your full attention.
Be kind – Mark Twain said, “Kindness is language which the deaf can hear and the blind can see.” When we reach out with a wholehearted effort to help we often get much more than we give.
Brainstorm - Albert Einstein said, “Logic will get you from A to B. Imagination will take you everywhere.” Always be willing to let your imagination play. When you do, your creativity may blossom.
Never linger - Mark Twain said, “The secret of getting ahead is getting started.” Perfectionism can hang people up and bury projects. Twain cuts through the excuses and tells us to just get moving.
Keep trying - Albert Einstein said, “A person who never made a mistake never tried anything new.” Fear of failure can create huge losses. Great inventions and inspired ideas have to actually be put out there to become real.
Keep an open mind - Mark Twain said, “Give every day a chance to be the most beautiful of your life.” If you only see the clouds you may get rain.
Contribute good things - Albert Einstein said, “Strive not to be a success, but to be of value.” The best leaders that I have known focused on the project at hand, not the ultimate rewards. When the focus is strong, rewards follow.
Be courageous - Mark Twain said, “With courage you will dare to take risks, have the strength to be compassionate, and the wisdom to be humble. Courage is the foundation of integrity.” Speak up and stand up for yourself and those around you wherever you are.
Focus - Albert Einstein said, “Intellectuals solve problems. Geniuses prevent them.” Make the effort to get to the core of the issue.
Here's to new successes in the New Year.
