Dogs Can Make You Healthy and Happy

By Kate Gardner

Recently, I wrote a piece for The Joint Chiropractic about the awesomeness of cats. But I want it to be crystal clear -- I love dogs just as much as I love cats. Though right now we have four cats and one dog, I have had more dogs in my lifetime than cats. Two of those dogs (my corgis) were with me through some of the biggest changes in my life. In fact, I think those sweet puppies helped me through tough times and I know they made my life better.

Lots of people probably feel the same way! A 2017-2018 survey of American households showed that dogs are by far the most popular pet in the country, with around 60 million families having a pup (as reported by the Insurance Information Institute). Clearly, a lot of us love dogs and we get a lot in return for that love.

Physical

It makes sense that dog owners might get more exercise than those who don't own dogs, but now there's research to back it up. A study published in Scientific Reports shows that both adults and children who have a dog in the home are more likely to meet guidelines for physical activity.

This increased activity may be the driving force behind some of the other heart-health benefits found in dog owners as reported in the journal Circulation by the American Heart Association. Various studies have shown dog owners may be less likely to have diabetes and are more likely to have lower cholesterol levels.

Emotional

Of course, few of us bring dogs into our homes simply to get more exercise. We adopt them because they're cute, sweet, furry, and good to snuggle with. In short, we like having them around and they make great companions. Many studies have shown that owning a dog can reduce anxiety and depression in people with various illnesses. A study published in the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health showed that people with chronic low-back pain reported less depression and anxiety than back pain sufferers who did not have a dog.

I think it would be hard for research to quantify what makes dogs great. I personally like to hold my 40-pound dog like a baby and rub her belly but I can't think how a scientist could capture how wonderful that is. Some of the best things in life aren't meant to be measured, they are simply meant to be enjoyed.
