How to Leave Room for the Rest of Your Life
By Sandy Schroeder
Have you ever gotten so wrapped up in high voltage projects that you simply forgot to take time out for the rest of your life? If you consider what that kind of intensity can do to the quality of your life, you may want to stop, take a deep breath, and add a few breaks here and there.
Look Familiar?
If you have been down these paths before, or are in the midst of a big push right now, you may have found you really do need to take time out, to do the little day-to-day stuff that add the color, taste, texture and warmth we all crave.
Think in terms of fresh hot coffee and warm home baked banana loaf bread for breakfast, or a late night pasta supper with friends. Long walks, early morning runs, or weekend hikes work too.
Whatever your favorite life details are, it's important to not lose sight of them when life moves a little too fast or work seems to multiply. For me that means it it's time to change the flow.
- Time to talk with buddies and compare notes on daily struggles
- Time to read a chapter or two in a book from my favorite author
- Time to collect the ingredients and try a totally new recipe
What's The Rest of Your Life Look Like?
What will make every day special or just a little bit better?
Special spaces - You could set aside an hour every day to just be with your kids. No interruptions, no tasks. Just be there.
Off limits - Could you use a half hour every morning to sit quietly and absorb life before all of the commotion starts?
Lending a hand - Would you reserve every third Saturday to help someone in need? Hospitals, senior centers, libraries, and animal or marine shelters will all welcome the attention with donations and hours on deck.
Daily motion - Would you make sure you are walking, running, stretching, or moving in some other way to keep your body up to par?
Menu upgrades - Would you start adding extra veggies and fruits to every meal?
More music - Would you remember to add your favorite tunes to much of your day?
Giggles to go - Would you remind yourself to laugh a little more every day?
We are all different, but we are all much alike too. The need to lighten the load is universal.
