Getting Healthier Can Be A Little Easier in Fall

By Tom Herrin

Just about everyone in Texas is probably glad summer is over.  While it is always nice to have vacation time, the heat and humidity are something else.  By the time it is over, many are glad it is behind them.  The coming of fall is a season to look forward to.  The cooler air is such a nice break.  People may feel that they could do anything they want in the way of exercise or any outdoor activity.  The holidays are right around the corner.  It seems as if every community around has some kind of outdoor event this time of year.

Pull the Bike Back Out

Fall is the time of year that I usually think about getting on my bicycle and just riding until I absolutely have to come in.  Riding in fall can be an extremely pleasant experience, whether it is day or night.  People can pace themselves in this low-impact activity and truly enjoy nature.  Riding can be alone or in groups with the same results.  It is ready-made for fall.

Let Everyday Chores Be A Workout

On this side of the Brazos, people pretty much have to deal with leaves if they live in a house with a yard.  Trees are great for shade and beauty, but that comes at a price.  Falling leaves are practically an everyday occurrence.  Raking them can burn up to 400 calories per hour.  Most people will end up doing some almost every day.  If they do this with enthusiasm, they can get a workout and beautify the yard at the same time.  They are often so busy with raking and bagging that they hardly realize they are exercising.

The Harvest is a Great Time to Try New Foods

Just like the early settlers to this country, people can try a lot of foods they are unfamiliar with.  With all of the fairs and farmers markets, you can sample all kinds of things.  Find a new food to take home and a recipe to make a new dish.  It can be fun and can help children to learn to broaden the variety of foods in their diet.  This may help promote better health along with the exercise they can get into.  It can make a healthy lifestyle look pretty attractive.
