Exercise Effectively at that Office Job

By Tom Herrin

The exercise business is pretty good.  People all over look for ways to do more of it.  There are groups all around, indoors and out.  Many people choose to work at home.  Some work in jobs in which they move around and get a lot of exercise at work.  For those who work in office jobs in which they sit just about all day long, it is a bigger challenge for them to get in much exercise.  It is often difficult to get motivated once they get home.  There are ways to exercise at work that can save time as well as provide a good break in the dull day.

It May Help Work the Arms

When people can't lift weights or do some other kind of traditional workout for the arms, there are some simple ways to do just about the same thing.  One is to sit up straight and grab the sides of the seat of the chair in which they are sitting.  They can lift as if they are going to lift the chair so that the arm muscles become tense.  They can pull for about 10 seconds and release.  Repeating this about five times will provide a decent workout.

It May Work the Legs

Many people sit with their legs crossed when they are relaxing.  This may be turned into an exercise by extending the legs as they remain crossed.  Extending them as far as possible, pressure should be created by pressing down while resistance is given by the other leg.  Holding this for 20 to 30 seconds, and then switching legs and doing the same with the other leg can be a good exercise.

It May Put You in the Driver's Seat

Working out while sitting can be a great way to take advantage of a little down time at work.  It may help build a few muscles as well as be a little bit of a wake-up activity when you feel like you are dragging.  Once you identify your real needs, you will be able to plan accordingly.  I have done some of these exercises and found that they can be just as effective in building muscle as more traditional exercise.  It can also free up some time after work for other things.  It does not take away from doing your job as it is likely to help you to be a more productive worker.
