Is a Sore Arm the Price We Pay for a Vaccine?
By Tom Herrin
With all of the hype about the virus and a vaccine, many of us have simply become worn out. The virus is certainly serious and has killed hundreds of thousands in this country alone. As it continuously mutates, as viruses do, it seems to come at us from all different directions. The rapid development of vaccines has been nothing short of miraculous. In the past, this process has often taken years. Even though it has been a difficult wait, the fact that some individuals have already taken a vaccine is amazing. And while there have been a few setbacks, progress is overall pretty good. In just a few more short months, each of us will likely have the opportunity to choose for ourselves as to whether or not we will take a vaccine. Now is the time to be gathering information in order to make a good decision.
Vaccines Can Change the Future
When the smallpox vaccine was developed, it was a true scientific breakthrough. That particular virus was known to devastated communities and run out of control. Once the vaccine was developed and somewhat successful, people began to look at what other illness they may be able to control. Many of the childhood vaccines have been highly successful. Measles was once a serious threat but is now seldom heard of. Rubella was responsible for many birth defects no longer seen. Polio was a common crippler minimized by a successful vaccine.
Vaccine Can Creates Fear
Some people have had immune responses that have been somewhat serious. Others have had mild discomfort that still caused them to avoid many of them. Some reactions to vaccines have been fever, soreness, muscle weakness, headaches, loss of some senses, and seizures. Some people have simply chosen to take their chances. A hundred years have come between us and the Spanish flu, so many have no recall as to how bad it can be. Some of the problems with the swine flu vaccine of the 1970s may have discouraged some.
It Requires Legitimate Pondering
I intend to gather all of the information I can about the vaccines. There is plenty available. When we ultimately make a decision that may affect us and our families, we all want it to be the right one. Looking back with regret is never a good feeling. Good or bad, the time will be upon us soon to choose.
