A Healthy Spine at School and Work

By Sara Butler

When the weather outside isn't nearly so frightful, it's easy to take time on the weekends or in the evenings to stay active. With school in session and the weekends not so conducive to outdoor activities, it's easy to neglect your overall health as well as your spinal health.  Here are a few tips to help you keep your spinal health front and center while you're at work and school no matter what time of the year it is.

In Your Workspace, Think Ergonomically

Whether you're sitting at a computer for school or work, it's important to keep ergonomics in mind. Your computer screen should be right at or just below eye level so you don't have to look down as you work on your computer. Looking down for long periods at your computer or some other electronic device, such as your smartphone, can lead to a condition called tech neck, which can cause pain and discomfort in your upper back and neck.

It's also important to get up and move around at least once per hour. This will help stretch out your muscles and get you out of the posture you've been sitting in. You don't have to do anything fancy during the break, just getting up and walking around as you do some gentle stretches is enough.

Carry Light

If you lug a backpack or a laptop bag to and from school or work each day, it's important to remember that you must carry light and carry right. The weight should be distributed evenly in your bag so it doesn't throw you off balance. Instead of a bag that only hangs on one shoulder, consider investing in a fitted backpack to help reduce stress and strain on your body. And never carry more than 10 percent of your body weight in your bag or you could cause strain injuries that lead to major discomfort down the road.

It's easy to forget about things such as spinal health when you're focused on work and school, but it's important to make these small suggestions into habits in order to stay healthy. Until the weather clears and you can get back outside after work and on the weekends, it's important as ever to ensure that you're practicing good habits throughout the day to keep your spine healthy.
