Most people know that walking for fitness is a great way to get in shape no matter your activity level. It’s good for beginners just trying to get into regular exercise and seasoned exercisers that want to add variety to their workout plan. What you may not be aware of is that a 30-minute walk can provide a host of benefits to your health above helping you to reach and maintain a healthy weight. Here are just a few of the benefits of a daily walk.
It Elevates Your Mood
Sometimes all you need to change your point of view is a little bit of fresh air. Studies have found that a daily walk can elevate your mood and get you out of a cycle of negative thinking. It can help to reduce depression and help you keep your emotions in a more positive place.
Helps with Bone Density
As you get older you can begin to lose bone mass, which can make taking a fall or getting injured a serious event. To help combat this side effect of aging, walk to help improve your bone density. Studies have found that a walk can stop loss of bone density associated with osteoporosis. If you walk for 40 minutes a day, it can help reduce your chance of falling as well as decrease your chance of hip fracture.
Reduce Blood Pressure
High blood pressure is often referred to as a silent killer because it doesn’t have a lot of specific symptoms to let you know it’s happening. If you can get into a consistent walking routine, then you can lower your blood pressure and help reduce your chances of heart disease in the process. You should always consult a doctor to make sure you’re healthy enough to start a new exercise program, but walking is a safe form of exercise for nearly everyone!
Stress isn’t something you can avoid, it’s something you have to learn how to handle. That’s why getting outside for a walk can help to get your mind off stressful situations and help clear your mind. When you walk, be aware of your breathing, the movements of your body, and focus on something that makes you happy. This can help you shrug off your anger about the guy who cut you off in traffic on the way home.
