Reasons Why You Shouldn't Skip Breakfast
By Sara Butler
Breakfast has been called the most important meal of the day – and that isn’t just a marketing scheme. Any goal you have for your health begins at the breakfast table. Providing your body with a filling, quality breakfast in the morning has a ton of health benefits. Of course, you have to operate within your own parameters – if you can’t choke down oatmeal, then don’t make yourself! But here are a few reasons you should put more thought into your morning meal.
It’s Good for Your Heart
You may not love eating breakfast but your heart does! According to the National Institutes of Heath and a study from the journal Circulation, men who don’t eat breakfast have a 27 percent increased risk of heart disease or heart attack than men who do eat breakfast.
Of course, you can’t just eat any old thing and expect it to be good for the old ticker. Syrup and butter with a side of pancakes or a pound of greasy bacon aren’t heart-healthy, but a breakfast with some quality protein and whole grains is a great way to start your day.
It Fights Inflammation
More and more research is pointing to chronic inflammation as a huge problem for overall health and wellness. A study from the American Journal of Nutrition found that skipping breakfast can increase inflammation. And inflammation has now been linked to chronic illness such as diabetes, heart disease, and obesity.
You can combat this by having some anti-inflammatory breakfast foods! An egg scramble with some tomatoes and spinach or some yogurt with an apple is a great start to the day!
It Helps You Get Vitamins
People who eat breakfast also consume a huge chunk of their daily levels of nutrients right off the bat. Many traditional breakfast foods help to provide a large dose of the Vitamin D, Vitamin A, and Vitamin B12 the body needs every day. So, pay attention to the nutrients on your breakfast plate and realize the head start you’re giving your body each day.
Boost Brain Power
Getting going in the morning can be tough for your whole body but it’s especially difficult for the brain! Luckily, breakfast has been found to boost cognition in the morning. Berries, oatmeal, and a quality protein in the morning will set your brain up for the day ahead!
So, are you ready to give breakfast a try? Do it for your health and reap the benefits!
