When You Don't Get Enough Sleep
By Sara Butler
There are many reasons why you may not be able to get a full night’s rest. From time to time, it happens to everyone. The real question is: How do you function during the day when you’ve had a terrible night’s sleep? Here’s how you can seize the day, even when you’re tired.
Just Accept It
You can do everything you’re supposed to and still you can get a terrible night’s sleep. It’s simply not realistic to think that you’ll sleep like a baby every single night. So, when you get a poor night’s sleep the best thing you can do is to just accept it and move forward. It may not have been something you did that made you toss and turn, but just a fluke. Don’t let it throw you totally off course.
Try to Move Forward
Don’t let a poor night’s sleep ruin your whole day. So, it may not have been the rest you wanted or needed, but not all hope is lost. If you decide you’re going to have a miserable day, then you probably will. Instead, change your attitude and decide that no matter what, you’re simply going to have the best day ever!
Have Some Coffee
It’s OK to have an extra shot of espresso today. In fact, caffeine helps to speed up your brain’s nerve receptors. That means that you’ll feel more alert even when you didn’t sleep so well. Just try not to go crazy. A cup or two of coffee should be enough to give you an extra lift.
Take a Nap
When afternoon rolls around and you’re really feeling your lack of shut-eye from the night before, go ahead and take a rest. Lay your head down for about 15 minutes or so. You don’t even have to fall asleep, just rest. You might be surprised at how refreshed you feel.
Get Some Sunshine
Sunlight can give your brain a wakeup call, so if you’re feeling tired from lack of sleep, then get out in the sunshine. At lunchtime go for a stroll for about 15 minutes in order to soak up some sunshine. If natural light isn’t available, then bright indoor lights can work, too.
Not getting enough sleep isn’t something you want to do often, but it does happen. Overcome it and keep going, then focus on getting a better night’s sleep tonight!
