Healthy Habits that Might Make You Sick

By Sara Butler

You may think you’re doing all the right things to avoid illness this season and yet here you are, sick! It turns out that some of the things you are doing to stay healthy could be exposing you to germs. Just as with most other things in life, the Goldilocks principle is in effect – you have to find just the right balance of healthy habits in order to ensure your health. Too much or too little could land you in hot water – or with a cold that just won’t go away. Here are a few healthy habits that may be out of balance for you.

You Sleep Too Much

Do you look forward to the weekends so you can catch up on the sleep you’ve been missing all week long? While sleep is essential to a healthy lifestyle, too much sleep may be just as bad as too little. That’s because if you don’t maintain a regular sleep schedule, it can hurt your health.

A regular sleep schedule involves going to bed and waking up at about the same time each day, no matter what day it is. It’s the only way to promote long-term health and to support your body’s internal clock. If you sleep too much on the weekend, it’s difficult to return to a normal schedule during the week and then you start the sleep deprivation out all over again.

Exercise Too Much

Exercise is great for your health, but doing too much at once or increasing your activity level too quickly can have serious consequences for your health. The best exercise regimens allow activity and recovery, so make sure you’re scheduling regular periods of rest when you’re working out. Exercising too intensely or too frequently can actually suppress immune function and leave you vulnerable to illness.

Cutting Too Many Calories

Keeping track of what you eat isn’t a bad thing, but don’t go overboard in counting calories or your risk not getting the nutrients your body needs to stay healthy. Crash diets or any diet that is super restrictive can make it more difficult for you to get the minerals and vitamins you need to stay healthy. You can support a healthy immune system by counting calories in a balanced, healthy way. Consider meeting with a nutritionist to help you get started on the right path.

Stay healthy by avoiding these habits that may just be making you sick!
