Milk Myths -- Busted!

By Sara Butler

There are a lot of people who avoid drinking milk when they don't really need to. The reason they avoid it? Probably because they've heard some tall tales about the white stuff that makes them think it's akin to the devil's elixir. The truth is that a lot of myths about milk have been around for years, so you may have fallen victim to a few yourself. Here are the most popular milk myths and the truth behind them.

Myth No. 1: Milk Doesn't Have That Many Health Benefits

Yes, some people believe that milk is about as good for you as soda, but that's simply not true. One cup of milk provides your body with nine essential nutrients such as calcium, riboflavin, Vitamin D, Vitamin A, and protein. Vitamin D and calcium are especially important together because it helps with absorption of these nutrients to help keep your bones and central nervous system healthy. Milk consumption has also been associated with a reduced risk for chronic diseases such as heart disease, high blood pressure, and diabetes.

Myth No. 2: Milk Alternatives are Healthier

Unless you have some issue that precludes you from having dairy, such as lactose intolerance, the non-dairy alternatives such as coconut, rice, and almond milk are not as good for you. They simply don't have the same nutritional profile as cow's milk. They don't have as much protein and they're often a lot more expensive -- and their list of ingredients is often a lot longer, too!

Myth No. 3: Milk is Filled with Sugar

Yes, sugar is bad for you. But don't confuse the natural sugars found in milk with the added sugars found in a candy bar. The natural sugar in foods such as milk and fruit also comes with a bunch of other important nutrients your body needs to stay healthy. The natural sugar found in milk, called lactose, can be an essential part of a healthy diet.

If you've given up cow's milk, give it another look. While it is true that some people simply can't tolerate dairy, including milk, if that's not you then it's time to get back on the milk wagon so you're not a part of the millions of Americans who don't get the recommended daily amount of dairy in their diets.
