A Trip to the Zoo: How to Keep It Healthy

By Virginia Laird

Looking for family fun this summer? The zoo might offer the relaxing, slow pace you need on your day away. While it can be a great trip, there are some concerns about how to keep this day a healthy one. Health and wellness experts admit that walking through the zoo is a great way to get a few extra minutes (or hours) of exercise. Still, there are a few other things you can do to make sure your trip is a healthy one all day long, including:

  • Choose to pack your lunch
  • Bring plenty of water
  • Apply sunscreen throughout the day

Choose to Pack Your Lunch

When heading out for a trip to the zoo, it is always healthier to pack your lunch rather than purchasing food at the cafe. This allows you to follow your well-balanced diet without caving into all the variety of unhealthy choices. Health and wellness experts suggest packing your lunch allows you to help each member of your family make healthy choices too. All too often, fast food areas in any area offer little variety when it comes to low-calorie and well-balanced choices. Another perk of packing your lunch is the amount of money you can save by doing so. Most zoo locations offer a picnic area which makes taking your lunch even easier.

Bring Plenty of Water

Being properly hydrated is another healthy priority you should make throughout the summer. When heading to the zoo the best way to do this is to bring a water bottle. It is recommended that you consume half of your body weight in ounces daily. Bringing along a water bottle can serve as a reminder to drink too, because as you get lost in the fun of the zoo it can be easy to forget.

Apply Sunscreen Throughout the Day

Anytime you plan to spend time outdoors it is necessary to apply sunscreen. This can help prevent sunburn and sun damage. Research suggests that when the skin is damaged by the sun it increases the chances of developing skin cancer. It is advised that you apply sunscreen prior to leaving the house, as well as throughout the day while enjoying the zoo. This is one healthy habit you and your children can benefit from. Start making this a habit today.

With the San Antonio Zoo among the best in Texas, there is no reason to delay your trip any longer. And now, you can make it a healthy one.
