Tips for a Healthy Spine

By Madhusudhan Tammisetti

Back pain is the leading cause of spinal injury worldwide, affecting people of all ages.

Most people take their spinal health for granted even though they're heavily dependent on their spine for doing daily activities such as getting out of bed, moving things, sitting, and standing.

Let's look at some of the tips for a healthy spine.

Correct Your Posture

Poor posture places a great deal of strain on the body. Slouching, hunching, and other uncomfortable postures have a negative impact on your health as well as your appearance. Poor posture may harm your spine's health over time, triggering pain, reducing stability, and even limiting mobility.

It may take some time to become aware of the bad posture and correct it, but good posture may gradually become second nature with practice.

Maintaining the spine's natural curves and keeping it neutral is the secret to good posture. Keep your shoulders back and chin parallel to the ground when holding your head straight. Make sure the weight is fairly distributed on both sides. Don't cross your legs while sitting. Use a footrest or keep your feet flat on the ground.

Practice Responsible Lifting

People lift a lot of weight without considering the consequences it can have on their backs. Proper lifting technique is critical to avoid putting your spine in precarious positions or increase the risk of injury.

When lifting heavy weights, keep your back straight and bend at your elbows rather than the waist. Lift using your leg muscles while holding the back straight. Holding objects next to the body tends to reduce back strain.

It's important to know the limitations when carrying heavy objects. Don't carry more than you can handle.

Stay Active

Not only for your spine but also your overall health, movement is medicine. Exercising is one of the most beneficial things you can do for your whole body, and it even aids in the flexibility and strengthening of your spine. Any time you work out, whether it's walking, biking, swimming, or dancing, you're investing in your health.

You can exercise to improve your fitness levels, but you can also add small things to your daily routine to keep your physical activity at optimum levels.

Take frequent breaks and walk about every 20-30 minutes if you spend much of the day seated. Instead of sitting or standing idle, look for reasons to move. Using the stairs instead of the elevator, getting off one stop before your destination, and wandering about while on the phone are also excellent ways to stay active throughout the day.
