Kids Can Hurt Their Backs, Too
By Tom Herrin
When people think of back problems, they normally think about adults, and they are the ones who most often have those kinds of problems. Children are not exempt from that, however. As kids are getting ready to start school, they normally try to fill a big list of items. One of the most prominent on many lists is a backpack. While there are many lighter weight backpacks on the market, it is many times the big ones that kids go for. Backpacks can be great for some purposes, but carrying a lot of large objects can be a real overload for young children. If your kids end up with back pain from carrying backpack, a chiropractor can provide real relief that can start their year off right.
Backpacks Can Do Damage In More Ways Than One
Children tend to do the same thing many adults do, and that is carry far more things than they need. Kids carry backpacks in a lot of different ways. Some carry them in a fairly conventional fashion with both arms in a strap and on their backs. Even here, the pack can often be too heavy. Some studies have indicated that kids may carry as much as 20 to 25 percent of their body weight in their pack. Some kids carry their packs over one arm. This may be even worse than carrying them too heavy. When they carry them over one arm, they are forced to shift their load to one side. This can cause them to walk unbalanced in order to compensate for it.
A Few Suggestions
It may be a good idea to help children choose smaller backpacks. This can help them to manage better and avoid carrying so many things. Children should also practice carrying their packs a little higher. When a pack falls too far below their waist, they are more likely to lean forward, adding more chance of straining their backs.
