Can You Work Muscles Without Moving?
By Tom Herrin
Most people think of a lot of movement when they think about working their muscles. It seems to be the natural process of things. Whether it is running, playing some kind of game, or simply exercising, people relate a workout with activity. Several years ago, isometric exercises were a pretty big thing. They have made some resurgence recently. Isometric exercising is a way of causing the muscles to contract without movement. For the most part, isometric exercises are done by holding a fixed position. It may be done by simply holding a set position or exerting pressure against an immovable object.
It May Protect against Age-Related Muscle Loss
As people age, many of them have a difficult time working their muscles. Injuries and age in general can contribute to problems in actively performing some physical exercises. Isometric exercises can work those muscles without placing undue stress on them. It can improve strength, endurance, and mobility.
It Can Save Time and Money
In these hectic times, people get pretty tied up with busy schedules. Making time to do all of the things on that busy schedule is a challenge. Doing isometric exercises can allow people to concentrate on a few particular areas of muscle without excessive amounts of time. It does not take much time to isolate a few muscles through isometrics. There is also no cost as there is no equipment needed or special clothing. People can take a few minutes out of their day and work on some particular area in which they have concern. There is no real risk of injury either, since they are not straining beyond their body’s ability.
It May Do a Variety of Other Things
Isometrics can help kill a lot of birds with few stones. When people have had injuries and are in need of recovery, isometrics can be a way to work the muscles without more injury. Another good thing about isometrics is that it can be done anywhere. They also help to stimulate chemicals in the body that help to feel better. Years ago, I did isometrics regularly. They seemed to work pretty well for improving some muscle strength. It was a pretty good time-saver as well. If you want to improve some muscles with limited time and space, try a few isometrics.
