How to Shake Up Your Life
By Sandy Schroeder
Most of us have grooves that work to keep us moving and keep us comfortable, but sometimes we just need to break out. When those grooves become so deep that we become complacent about everything, we may need to see what we are missing.
- Try shopping and browsing somewhere new
- Go to a lecture, museum or exhibit that's all new for you
- Do something you used to do a year ago
- Call an old friend and spend the afternoon talking
When we open ourselves up to the world we are often surprised how much new stuff has come up since we checked.
Do whatever you think of to test your current lifestyle to see what you are missing. Comfort zones are great but there may be some new things you might like to include to make it even better.
Start making a list of things you have always wanted to do and make a few of them happen. Some people do this all of the time, but if you need a nudge, here are some more ways to get started from WellAndGood.com.
Switch your whole schedule - Rotate everything that you do for a day or a week whenever possible. Take new routes to work. Go different places for lunch or dinner and reach out to meet someone new.
Let yourself take more chances - Sometimes the best things in life are hiding out there just waiting to be discovered. Look around for things you would like to know more about. Ask questions wherever you are and really listen when you get answers. Browse a local bookstore and pick a book that you would never have considered. Reach out to people in your community or at work that you admire. Suggest coffee and find out more about them. Everything you explore may not be amazing, but you can be sure you will come away with new information and a few new ideas.
Make some real changes - Sometimes we are so busy we just put up with things at work or at home. Think about some of the things that bug you and start fixing them one by one. The satisfaction may prompt you to fix more and more things that you were just tolerating. Look around and ask yourself what would make you happier.
Sometimes the changes are really small, but totally great when they happen. Other times there are big changes that are waiting for you to take them on. This may be the right time to give these changes serious consideration. Don't rush, but do the homework to explore the changes and list the expected results. Then pick one and make it happen. Later you may ask yourself why you waited.
