Triathlon Training and Chiropractic Care

By Paul Rothbart

One of the most fascinating and absolutely brutal athletic competitions is the triathlon. It is a day-long race involving three different events. An ironman triathlon is a 2.4 mile swim, followed by a 112-mile bike ride, followed by a full marathon of 26.2 miles. Quite a daunting competition. Few people will actually train for a race at this level, but there are many local triathlons of shorter distances. They, too, present a challenge and for those who successfully complete one, the feeling of accomplishment is incredible. Participants reach a level of fitness they may have never thought possible. With the weeks of intense training the body goes through, strain, soreness, and injury are common. The body must be carefully looked after. Chiropractic care may be able to help triathletes keep moving toward the finish.

Taking Care of the Spine

The spine is the support structure for the entire body. If it hurts or is injured, it is difficult to do anything, let alone train for a triathlon. All three events place stress upon the spine. While swimming, the spine twists from side to side and flexes on stroke. On a long bike ride, the spine and neck are locked into one position, which can cause strain. Running involves the feet absorbing the shock of hitting the pavement, driving the force upward toward the spine. Pain, stiffness, and subluxations can result. This is the bread and butter of chiropractic care. It could be the difference between dropping out and continuing on.

Taking Care of the Joints

Shoulders, hips, knees, and ankles work very hard and absorb a lot of punishment while training for a triathlon. They too can become stiff and painful. A licensed chiropractic can work on those joints, improving flexibility and range of motion. This can help you maintain proper form, allowing you to swim, bike, and run further. Endurance is everything in a triathlon and you won't last long with pain in the joints.

Sleep and Stress Management

Good sleep is always important and especially so when taking on the kind of training needed to compete in a triathlon. Many chiropractic patients find that they sleep better when receiving regular treatments. The body can relax more easily when it's not full of aches and pains. With an intense training schedule and a race looming ahead, it is very common to experience stress. Chiropractic may be helpful in managing that stress so effective raining can continue.

Training for and finishing a triathlon is a huge accomplishment. You log a lot of miles along the way. Consider visiting The Joint Chiropractic. No appointment is necessary. You may find the chiropractic care gives you the edge to keep going and going and going.
