Blow Your Horn Without Blowing Your Health

By Tom Herrin

When looking for that formula that may lead to better health, most people think about all of the ways they can work out. There is always an exercise class. Many people like to stay with the standard running, biking, or swimming. The very last thing that many consider is playing some kind of a musical instrument, at least to help them improve physical health.  As a matter of fact, a lot of people tend to dismiss blowing a horn as something that people who have little concern about health do. That is not the case, however, as playing an instrument that relies on the air someone can provide actually has quite a few benefits to health.

It May Help Form Good Breathing Habits

Breathing is one of those things that everyone feels comes natural.  There is obviously a lot of truth to that, but it is possible to improve the patterns and habits associated with breathing.  This can enable people to be more efficient with it. Playing the lower brass and winds requires that people use full lung capacity.  Playing the higher sounds means that they will need to use that plus a greater amount of force. Either one can help develop some good habits.  There is even some evidence that playing these types of horns may be beneficial to asthma sufferers.

It May Improve Posture

People will have to sit or stand correctly in order to play an instrument that is driven by wind.  Holding the body in place is another good practice that can lead to good habits. This repetition can lead to development of stronger core muscles.  When the fact that they have to also hold a horn that weighs a few pounds while playing, it is another plus.

It May Relieve Stress

If you don’t enjoy something like making music, you should not do it.  When you can have that feeling of doing something that others can appreciate as much as you do, it can provide a sense of accomplishment and relaxation.  I enjoy the limited amount of music I can make. If you have played a horn before, get it out and brush up on it. It may surprise you how much it can do for you.  If you have never played, you can usually pick one up at a pawn shop at a low price. Lessons are available to increase your pleasure.
