You May Not Be Far from a Healthier Diet
By Tom Herrin
Being in Texas, many people expect a diet with lots of beef. While there are quite a few head of cattle around, many people who are concerned about their health are aware that they need a balance in all things. Sometimes adding some small things can make a world of difference. One of the easiest to add is fish. While some people believe they don't like fish, it may be simply that they haven't had the right kind or had it prepared in the right way. How many people have seen kids eat fish sticks? They are pretty popular with many of them. In fact, they seem to be a favorite of many. Finding ways to have fish may be a matter of finding what adjustments can be made so that people like it.
It Has Lots of Nutrients
People eat food for a couple of reasons. They may do so simply to satisfy hunger. Another reason may be to meet nutritional needs. Fish has iodine, minerals, and vitamins. It is usually really high in protein. Some kinds, such as tuna, salmon, sardines, trout, and mackerel, are considered to be fatty fish. These have omega-3 fatty acids whose benefits are widely known. In a study of more than 40,000 men who ate fish at least once per week, it was found that they had a 15 percent lower risk of heart disease.
It May Protect the Eyes
There has been much said about fish and the eyes. Studies have found that eating more fish seems to be helpful in preventing macular degeneration. Many people are advised to eat more fish or take fish oil supplements to help protect their vision. If it can help deter age-related vision problems, it is a good addition to a diet.
It Can Be Good to Eat
At our house, everyone enjoys fish. It can be inexpensive and easy to prepare. We like to eat salmon or tuna right out of a can. We like to have either one on salads. One of my favorite lunches is tuna. It is light and easy to prepare. I often open a can of sardines when I want a quick snack. I eat them with crackers. When we have a little more time, we like to have some kind of fish grilled, broiled, or baked. Try a little experimenting and find some kind that your family enjoys. Eating that fish may boost your diet and your health.
