You Can Dress for Successful Exercise in the Cold

By Tom Herrin

If you are one who enjoys exercising, you are doing something good to guard your health.  Establishing a good routine, and staying with it, is a great way to support health.  For those of us who prefer exercising outdoors, it can be an additional pleasure until the weather and temperatures begin to change.  At that time, things can go from good to bad in a hurry.  Determining just how to maintain the right temperature as you do so in temperatures that are dropping can be more than a small challenge.  At one time, many of us chose to wear some sort of sweats when we did this.  Since it was about all that was available, it worked.  The downside was that, once you became drenched with perspiration, you could end up being pretty cold.  This was miserable.  With the kinds of exercise apparel available today, you can dress in layers and remain really comfortable most of the time.

A Good Base Layer

For anything to work well, you have to have a good base.  With clothing available for exercise today, it is recommended that you wear a first layer that is tight-fitting and lightweight.  It needs to be able to wick away moisture and provide good airflow.  Getting wet and staying that way can really deflate interest in exercising, especially when it is cold outdoors.  The ability to remain relatively dry during a workout can help.

A Layer to Insulate

Each layer should have a designated responsibility, and this one should keep you warm.  In order to do this properly, it needs to insulate.  Familiar materials such as wool, fleece, and down are all still very practical.  With today's advancements, there are several newer materials that are well-designed and do a good job.  Many of the things worn in this layer have pockets, zippers, and such to make them practical.

A Protective Layer

When you are outdoors, you need something to provide some kind of protection as you encounter the elements and other objects.  This should be tough enough to resist rain, wind, and other things that may scrape or bump you.  If this layer has removable parts, it will be more useful as this can make it easier to manage conditions.  If it all works well, it will be successful, and you will be more likely to be motivated to continue with your program.
