3 Tips to Help Control Muscle Spasms

By Donna Stark

As much as you may believe you have total control of your movements, there may be times in your life when your muscles show you the complete opposite. Times when you may feel some tightness, pulling, cramping, or contracting. Times when your muscles remind you that, for the moment, they are the ones in charge, and if they want to spasm, they'll go right ahead and do it. And although those spasms can be downright annoying and sometimes even very painful, it's important to remember there are some things you can do to relax your muscles back into cooperation. Let's take a look at a few of those things below.

Chiropractic Care

Regular chiropractic adjustments can go a long way in preventing muscle tightness and strain. The adjustments your local chiropractors at The Joint Chiropractic provide will correct any alignment issues, restore function to your joints, improve circulation, and encourage your muscles to relax. Chiropractic care also helps reduce inflammation in the body which will take some of the pressure off your nerves.

In addition to the actual treatments you will receive at The Joint Chiropractic, your chiropractor may also help you design a healthier lifestyle plan to follow that can reduce the risk of future spasms from occurring in the first place.

Exercise and Stretches

Staying physically active and stretching daily can help keep your muscles loose, but be careful if a part of your body is in the process of experiencing a spasm. The best thing to do when a spasm interrupts our workout is to stop, rest, and massage the area. Don't go back to your activity if it aggravates or makes your spasm worse. And if you are unsure of which exercises and stretches you should do, ask your chiropractor during your visit!

Adequate Hydration

If you don't drink the recommended amount of water every day, you could be setting yourself up for chronic spasms. Be sure to carry a reusable water bottle around with you so it is easier to stay on top of your intake. Don't enjoy drinking water on its own? Infuse some flavor by adding fruit or vegetables to your bottle, or replace some of your water with electrolyte drinks. Sports beverages can help replace some of the nutrients you lose while working out. These nutrients are important because they help your muscles contract and relax.

Spasm-Free Days Ahead

Muscle spasms in the body can occur for various reasons and can seemingly pop out of nowhere, but that doesn't mean you need to sit by and do nothing about them. Take your power back and get your muscles to cooperate once again by following the tips above. And if you need more help to control them, establish routine chiropractic care at The Joint Chiropractic today!
