Picking the Healthiest TV Dinner Options
By Brandi Swieter
With National TV Dinner Day in September, it’s important to discuss which options are safe to consume. Not all TV dinners are created equally, with many filled with far too much sodium and calories to even be considered a beneficial meal. Options do exist, however, with fewer calories and plenty of nutrients that make them worth including the #NationalTVDinnerDay hashtag on your tweets and posts. Although TV dinners may not be the healthiest choice, these might be considered best of class.
Healthy Choice
Healthy Choice meals make an excellent option on National TV Dinner Day and any other day. The chicken choices are made with all natural chicken raised without antibiotics. Most meals are just 300 or 400 calories for the entire thing, not 500 or more as with many TV dinner selections. They are also filled with veggies and use steamer bowls for healthier heating, even in the microwave.
Stouffer’s Fit Kitchen Bowls
Another meal filled with veggies made up of nutrients and vitamins, Stouffer’s newer addition called Fit Kitchen Bowls make an excellent choice for lunch or dinner. White meat chicken is used for the chicken meals, and all types are packed with protein. Most meals are packed with Vitamin C and Vitamin A with healthy doses of calcium, iron, and fiber as well.
Smart Ones
Weight Watchers created a healthier, lower calorie frozen meal called Smart Ones. Most are 300 calories or less with a low fat content, high fiber content, and plenty of protein. The meals take typical hearty dishes and turn them into a healthier option that people can enjoy without the guilt. Pizza, pasta, Mexican cuisine, and even breakfast options are possible.
Saffron Road
All-natural, non-GMO, gluten-free options exist with Saffron Road frozen meals. Chickpeas, quinoa, spinach, rice, herbs, lean meats, and vegetables are the typical ingredients found in these dinners. They are very low in sugar, often with just a few grams, yet high in protein and fiber. With under 800 milligrams of sodium for many of the meals, Saffron Road provides some of the healthiest options on the market. The Saffron Road website offers a helpful “Where to Buy” feature that allows people to find locations nearby that sell them. Not all stores carry the brand.
Choosing healthy meals is always the best solution, especially for those looking to improve their overall health and wellness. Even on National TV Dinner Day, people are still able to find something healthy as long as they search for pre-packaged dinners with fewer milligrams of sodium, fewer calories, and higher percentages of important vitamins and nutrients.
