How to Make the Healthiest Parfaits
By Brandi Swieter
National Parfait Day arrives in late November. This treat comes in many forms. A yogurt parfait is a healthier version while an ice cream parfait is a fun dessert. Learning how to make a healthier treat to be enjoyed year-round is the best option.
Use Low-Fat Yogurt
Flavored yogurts and fatter versions are not as beneficial to the body as the low-fat kind. Anyone attempting to make a yogurt parfait as their treat for the day should use an unflavored low-fat version for the best benefits. It still provides calcium and vitamins without the extra calories.
Fill it With Fruit
Adding a ton of fruit to the mix will help boost the nutrition factor. Berries are especially beneficial in a parfait because they contain lots of antioxidants and vitamins that work to fight off infection and keep the body healthy. A blueberry parfait is an excellent option. Strawberries and raspberries make delicious choices as well.
Make it a Nice Cream
Ice cream may be delicious, but it's also full of sugar and calories. Nice cream is the alternative version. People use frozen bananas to mash up their own flavorful dessert. This is a great option for a warm night or simply when someone is feeling like a frozen dessert over a creamy yogurt blend like most healthy parfaits versions use. Mango pairs well in this concoction.
Try a Chia Pudding Parfait
Chia seeds offer antioxidants, protein, omega-3 fatty acids, fiber, and more. Make them into a pudding parfait for one of the healthiest choices around. Kiwi pairs well in this dessert. Start with blackberries, coconut milk, frozen bananas, and oats for a purple layer on the bottom. The chia layer that comes next is made from nothing but chia seeds and coconut milk. Top with a green layer of kiwi, more frozen bananas, more coconut milk, some cucumber, and spinach. It offers a great way to get in a serving of greens for the day and packs a lot of punch when it comes to nutrition. Vitamins galore are in this colorful parfait mix.
Parfaits come in so many different varieties that it's easy for anyone to find an option they enjoy. On National Parfait Day and any other time throughout the year, choose a healthier parfait treat that satisfies the sweet tooth without breaking the diet.
