Walking Requires Good Shoes

By Paul Rothbart

Assuming two healthy legs, everyone does some walking. Some people do a lot of walking. It could be your job, taking your dog for walks, or playing with children. Many walk for exercise. It is one of the best ways to stay fit. However you log those miles, they place quite a workload on feet, legs, and even your lower back. You want to protect these body parts so your walks are comfortable and don't do damage that will stop you in your tracks. Like tires on a car, shoes are your contact with the pavement. Good quality shoes are important for walkers. Here are some things to consider when purchasing a pair.

Shoes Must Fit

It seems to be common sense that your shoes must fit you. But fit is about more than the number of your size. Some manufacturers' shoes run big or small. Trying on shoes and walking around in them is essential when buying new ones. When heading out for shoe shopping, wear the same type of socks that you intended to wear with your new shoes. It's best to buy shoes later in the day when you have been walking around. Feet swell and are at their largest at that time. Buy from a store that has professionals who know how to fit shoes and have the pro measure both feet. Athletic shoe stores are good places for this.

Choose Shoes That Suit Your Foot Type

Feet are not all shaped the same. They may be wide or narrow. Good brands of shoes make different widths to accommodate non-standard feet. Another part of the foot that varies from person to person is the arch. Flat feet or fallen arches are very common. Feet such as this require an arch support to prevent pain and injury. Your heels are another area that needs attention. Make sure that the shoe holds securely at the back. Shoes that slide up and down the heel while you walk will cause painful blisters that can become infected. At the very least, they will make walking difficult or impossible. A solid tread will help prevent slipping and some padding in the sole will cushion the shock of each step.

Replace Shoes When Necessary

Everything wears out eventually and this certainly includes shoes. When shoes are worn out, they no longer provide the same support or protection and may no longer fit. Keep an eye on the soles for worn tread. It's also important to inspect for holes or tears. Generally, a good pair of shoes will last for about 300-400 miles. If your shoes no longer feel comfortable, that is another sign that you need a new pair.

Walking is something most of us do a lot of every day. It's the most basic way to get around and a great way to work out. Keep protected by always wearing quality shoes suited to your individual needs. Take good care of your feet and they will keep you striding along.
