3 Tips for Dealing With Health Anxiety

By Genevieve Cunningham

Anxiety is one of the worst feelings. It's so draining. And it's even worse when that anxiety is because of something really important … like health. Health anxiety affects a surprising number of people. And unfortunately, it can mean that these people aren't getting the help they need. And because our health is an ever-present concern, health anxiety is terribly tough to beat. But not impossible. If you suffer from health anxiety and would like to put it to rest,  take a look at these tips for overcoming the feeling and getting care when you need it.

Learn to Meditate

Meditation is an ancient practice with powerful benefits. It helps clear the mind, reduce stress, and often gives you a new perspective. For those suffering from anxiety, meditation can be key. Start with a simple five or 10 minutes per day, and add time when you're able. If you need help, look for guided meditation, which you can often find online for free. Make meditation a part of your life, and you'll likely see a decline in anxiety of all kinds.

Stay Away From Google

Google can be the most useful tool … but not when you have health anxiety. If you suffer from this condition, just say no to Google. Don't look up your symptoms. Don't read stories of other people with your condition. Just don't.  Get your advice from professionals, and don't try to diagnose or treat yourself until your anxiety is cleared.

Don’t Plan Too Far Ahead

Here's  an interesting thing about those with health anxiety: The longer you have to dwell on the problem, the worse it's going to get. Don't do this to yourself. Yes, it's important to see your doctor. But if you can avoid it, don't schedule yourself months out. Call the doctor and make an appointment for a week or less away. This gives you much less time to think and obsess over it, and raises the chance that you'll actually show up to your appointment.

If your health anxiety is seriously affecting your quality if life, its always a good idea to see a professional. But if it's manageable, use these tips to get it under control. With less anxiety, you can get the care you need and feel better than ever before you know it.
