Flu Season: How to Stay Safe and Healthy
By Genevieve Cunningham
Flu season. If these two little words give you a bit of anxiety, you've probably been down with the flu before. The flu is miserable -- body aches, fever, chills, congestion. It's not a fun experience. While we can't guarantee ourselves a flu-free season, there are things we can do to improve our chances of avoiding this frustrating illness. If you're interested in staying as far away from the flu as possible, take a look at how you can stay safe and healthy all season long.
It's Never Too Late to Get the Shot
A lot of people think that getting a flu shot is something you do early in the fall, and if you miss the time frame, then you may as well forget it. But the flu shot can be effective no matter when you get it. If you haven't received it this year, it's not too late. Go ahead and head to the clinic to get all caught up. You'll need a couple of weeks to build immunity, but the efficacy will be the same. As long as you haven't already caught the flu this year, it's not too late for prevention.
Stock Up on Immune Boosting Foods
Keeping a strong immune system is always a good idea, but it's especially good during times of illness. When your immune system is strong, it has an easier time fighting off foreign invaders -- like the flu germ. Make sure you have Vitamin C rich foods -- think citrus fruits and dark leafy greens -- and also keep soothing foods such as chicken soup and crackers. The idea is to be prepared. Boost the immune system now to prevent, and stock up on foods just in case you come down with the virus.
Take Care of Yourself
Taking care of yourself is something that should be done at all times of the year, but during times of illness, it's especially important. Take care of yourself with good habits -- a healthy diet, a solid sleep schedule, and plenty of exercise. It's also important to spend some time outdoors, lower daily stress, and maintain a work-life balance. The better your self-care habits, the easier it is to stay well.
Flu season is no fun. Trying to avoid the flu or trying to heal from the flu is a difficult task. But if you want to stay healthy and feel your best, you'll need to be proactive. Use these tips to keep you healthy now and all season long and to keep the flu far away from your body, home, and life.
