Are You Drinking Too Much Water?

By Sara Butler

You know that drinking enough water each day is important to your health and wellness, but even when it comes to water, it turns out that you can get too much of a good thing. If you drink too much water per day, then you may begin to notice some unsavory side effects on your health and wellness. Here are a few clues that you're taking proper hydration a little too far.

You Wake in the Night

The first clue that you're drinking too much water is that you get up in the night several times to use the bathroom. Of course, other conditions such as undiagnosed diabetes, prostate issues, and urinary tract infections can cause this issue, but if your urine is also clear when you get up to go, then that's a sign that too much water is the driving force.

You're Swollen

Drinking too much water can also cause your body to retain fluids, which you may begin to notice or feel as swelling in your feet, hands, and even your lips. This is due to the fact that drinking too much water can lead to an electrolyte imbalance in your body. If you flush out the sodium your body needs to function properly, then your body will retain fluid and swell. Your extremities may feel stiff or they might look puffy if you've been pounding too much water.

You Have a Headache

You can have a headache from neglecting to drink enough water each day and also from drinking too much! That pesky sodium imbalance can be to blame since it can actually lead to swelling of the tissues in your skull and lead to a headache.

If you drink way too much water it can lower your body's sodium level so much that it can be dangerous, leading to massive swelling of the brain that can lead to seizures, brain damage, and maybe even death. Of course, those are extreme examples of the consequences of too much water that only highlights how important finding a good balance of hydration is.

How Much Water?

So, how much water should you shoot for? The experts say that you should drink about half of your body weight in ounces of water per day. So if you weigh 120 pounds, then 60 ounces of water will be enough.
