3 Reasons a Post-Workout Snack is Necessary

By Virginia Laird

When trying to lose weight, it can be difficult to believe that indulging in a post-workout snack can be beneficial. Many would prefer to think a snack after the workout would undo all the effort just spent; rather, it is necessary to help the body recover from the exertion and maintain energy. While a post-workout snack is a must, there are plenty of things that do not meet the criteria, as the snack should offer the right nutrition to meet the body’s needs. Some of the criteria a snack should meet include:

  • Replenishing carbs are key to maintaining performance
  • Muscles need to be refueled after a grueling workout
  • Drinks are best post-workout

Replenishing Carbs are Key to Maintaining Performance

One thing to understand about a workout is that it robs the body of carbs, which can be good. However, some carbs are needed to help the body function. It is important to replenish some of the carbs burned off. Most personal trainers suggest people rely on chocolate milk as the post-workout snack of choice. It provides a balance of carbs and protein the body is craving after working out.

Muscles Need to be Refueled After a Grueling Workout

There is no feeling like a great workout. However, once the workout is complete, a person may notice exhaustion setting into the muscles almost immediately. This is, in part, due to the body burning the stored energy (muscle glycogen). It is after a workout that this muscle glycogen is at its lowest. This makes it important to replenish some of it to help the body maintain some energy.

Drinks are Best Post-Workout

Drinks are the most recommended type of post-workout snack because research suggests that flavored beverages can stimulate thirst. Replacing water after a workout is paramount, although can be difficult immediately following a grueling workout. Even the thought of tanking up on water can leave the stomach churning, which is even more reason to rely on the beverage immediately after a workout to help get a person’s thirst in check.

The next time you get ready to head to the gym for your workout, plan ahead for your post-workout snack. Something as simple as a glass of chocolate milk will suffice and offer many benefits to the body.
