What Your Nails are Saying About Your Health

By Genevieve Cunningham

Our bodies are truly amazing. When we really learn to listen to our bodies, there is so much that they will tell us. And they often tell us in a variety of interesting ways. If our skin is suddenly blemished, our body may be telling us to cut the sugar or drink more water. If our digestion is not functioning well, our bodies may be telling us to eat more fiber. Each part of our bodies tells us something different. We simply have to decipher the code! If you’re interested in learning to listen to your body and you need an easy place to start, take a look at what your nails may be saying about your health.

White Nails Might Mean a Liver Check

White nails might indicate that your body has too many toxins. When toxins are present in the body, it's the job of the liver to filter them out. So if your nails are excessively white, and your body is full of toxins, it could be a sign that your liver isn't doing its job as well as it should be. If you notice this symptom, get to the doctor for a quick check and a plan of action.

Blue Nails Might Indicate a Lung Issue

Similar to white nails, nails that have a blue hue might mean that there is something more serious going on inside your body. And when you see blue in this scenario, it's probably a problem with the lungs. If your lungs aren't working properly, it can cause a decrease in oxygen throughout the body. And when you're not getting enough oxygen, it often shows up as a blue tint. If you notice this problem, and you don't have a good explanation for why your nails are blue, get to the doctor immediately, as a lack of oxygen is a serious health complication.

Nail Biting Might Be a Sign of Anxiety

Many people bite their nails. It's not always a sign that something bad is happening. It might just be a bad habit. But it's also possible that excessive nail biting is a sign of anxiety. If you think this might be you, head to the doctor, explain your symptoms, and get a little help managing stress and taking anxiety out of the equation. If

Just like every other part of your body, the nails can tell you a lot about your health. Take a look at your nails. Get to know their usual appearance, and then be on the lookout for any changes. And if your nails are unhealthy, get checked out by your general practitioner. Listen to your body -- and your nails! -- and keep yourself healthy every day.
