Are You Stuck? Push Past the Plateau With These Tips
By Genevieve Cunningham
If you're working toward better health, hitting the plateau can be incredibly frustrating. The harsh truth is that everyone is going to hit the plateau at one point or another. It's a part of the fitness journey, but the fact that it's normal doesn't make it any less frustrating. Luckily, if you're serious about wellness, there are ways to push through the plateau and come out successful on the other side. To push through a fitness rut, take a look at these tips to try in your life today.
Reassess Your Diet
The problem with our health is, more often than not, all in our diet. Even if you started out on the right foot, it can be easy to let the calories sneak back in. If you've hit a plateau, it's time to reassess your diet. Start counting your calories again. Check for hidden calories in drinks and snacks. Measure your portions if you need to. And finally, reassess your caloric needs, which may have changed if you've been losing weight. Your diet is really important, and making small changes can make a big difference in the progress that you see.
Increase Your Calorie Burn
Once you've assessed your food, it's time to consider your exercise routine. Are you really burning enough calories? Maybe it's time to increase it! You can increase your calorie burn by intensifying your workout with weights, speed, or resistance bands. You can also simply work out for longer periods of time or twice per day. Increasing the number of calories that you burn can give you a boost and push you over a pause in progress.
Get Some Rest
Sometimes it's not about doing more; it's about doing less. If you're not giving your body enough rest, it may rebel. It may hold onto weight instead of letting it go. If you've been pushing and pushing and pushing with little in the way of rest and relaxation, consider slowing down a little bit. Our bodies crave rest, and sometimes that's all we need to push through. Get a little extra rest, and then jump back into your routine with more energy than before.
Plateaus are so hard. They make it difficult to stick with the plan. We like to see progress. It's what keeps us motivated when working out and healthy eating gets difficult. Use these tips to push past a plateau and get back into the groove of a healthy lifestyle in no time at all.
