A Smile May Put You In Control

By Tom Herrin

Just about everyone would like to have more control over their own lives.  One of those most depressing and frustrating things people can experience is the feeling that no matter what they do, they are not really in control of their own life but someone else is.  This can be true in a job, school, or almost any kind of activity.  A feeling of control can help people gain confidence and a brighter outlook.  Once they are able to feel more so, others around them may notice a more upbeat attitude and greater acceptance of everyone else.

It Can Make A Better Work Environment

People who smile and are happy tend to view their jobs in a better light.  Someone who whistles while they work really may find greater joy in accomplishing a task.  Others who work with them are often uplifted by the attitude they have and the atmosphere that they help form.  Those who smile are thought to be more creative in their jobs.  This may be due to the fact that they are more open to different ideas.  Creativity is essential to problem solving that is essential for so many jobs.

It Can Enhance Health

Smiling can help to slow the heart rate.  This is critical in helping to lessen the work that has to be done by the heart, allowing it to effectively move more blood with less effort.  It can reduce stress, which is one of the most common problems people deal with every day.  It can relax the body, allowing it to be more responsive to outside factors that may cause illness.  Anything that boosts the immune system is a plus.  Smiling can help to release endorphins that may kill pain, making it a natural pain reliever.

It Can Improve Your Social Life

Whether you are looking for one on one companionship or prefer group social life, smiling can help.  Others often feel more trust for those who smile.  A smile is also seen as a way of communicating empathy with others who may be have a less than desirable experience with something.  They feel connected.  Men are believed to be more likely to approach women who smile than those who make eye contact.  People are thought to appear as much as three years younger when they smile often.  Now would be a good time re-evaluate yourself.  If you are not doing it now, turn on that smile.
