Apples Are Often Taken for Granted
By Tom Herrin
The little things seem to be the ones we forget about a lot. In other words, we tend to look beyond what we have at hand and spend a lot of effort seeking those special things that we feel are going to make some great impact. It may be the sum total of those little things that really make a difference in something as important as our health. While some people spend considerable time and effort trying to find that special cure, others simply plod along, refining what they have so that it works for them. Apples are one of those things that people eat, but they may not realize how including them in their diet everyday can improve their health.
They May Prevent Heart Disease
Apples contain things that can help lower cholesterol. They also have antioxidants that can help reduce inflammation in the blood vessels. This can lower blood pressure which, in turn, can prevent damage to the heart that can be done when blood pressure becomes higher. There is some evidence that eating apples may also play some role in preventing, or slowing, Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases.
They May Help in Weight Management
There is never any magic formula for losing weight, but there are some things that can help. Cutting calories has to happen. For some, that is pretty difficult. Apples can help increase metabolism. It is believed that eating apples before a meal may increase metabolism or even prevent absorption of the calories taken in from other foods eaten afterwards. Many times, when I have started a diet, I would start out by eating apples as a major part of my meals. It seemed to help.
They Are Great to Eat
Many kinds of apples are naturally sweet. That makes them a great dessert, besides the fact that they actually can help clean the teeth and gums. They can be good in salads. They are good in pies. We enjoy eating them sliced with a dip made of peanut butter, honey, and uncooked oats. Pick up some and try them out with your family. Be creative and see what new ways you can find to eat them. You may be surprised at how good they can taste and how simple they are to store when taking them with you.
