Have Enough Hugs to Go Around

By Tom Herrin

There are lots of things people can do to make life better for those around them.  Most are interested in creating the best opportunities for their children and family members.  It is unfortunate that in today’s world, too many people try to buy the latest items for family members and forget the most basic things.  While gadgets can be good, personal attention is something that there's no replacement for. Showing affection is an important way to build overall better health for others.  It may be the cheapest way to do so.

Hugs May Lessen Fears

Just about everyone has some kind of fears.  It may be a fear of some horrible thing or it may be the results of some action.  Adults tend to fear failure in finances, jobs, relationships, and many other things.  Children may have more serious fears. They often fear that things are completely out of their control.  General insecurities may creep into their lives and never let up. Hugs can make people of any age feel more secure.  They can provide them a feeling of reassurance.

Hugs May Relieve Stress

Most people suffer from some kind of stress.  It may be from all kinds of things, but it is still present.  If someone receives a hug in a trying time or after a hectic day, it can help to relieve some of that stress.  When I was a high school principal, I used hugs to comfort adults who were having an especially difficult day. It was sometimes enough to help them to get through a tough time and let them know that others shared their feelings.

Hugs Are Not Just for the Young

Many times, older adults are cast into a sort of isolation.  While it is not intentional, it often happens as a result of a personal feeling of being unproductive.  I have enjoyed walking through a nursing home and speaking to some of those people who seem to be in a world of their own.  I have found that they have withdrawn more because of a feeling of poor self-worth than anything else. A kind word may bring them out of that and help them to open up.  They may be depressed. A soft touch can be the link between them and reality. I have found that they have much more to offer than I had assumed. If you are ever moved to try it, drop in and offer some kindness and a loving touch to an older person.  It could be the most rewarding experience you ever have and the greatest hug you ever give. You will likely be the recipient of much more than you expect.
