Health May Be Boosted by Learning a Language

By Tom Herrin

Every direction people may look, there are claims about what can help them to improve their health.  A lot of people seek things that may require some kind of special program.  Others may prefer something a little different.  In recent times, many people have done less socializing and have more time on their hands.  What better time to take on something that may help them in work, school, or the community while still doing some good things for health?  Learning a language has shown to be a way to support better health in quite a few ways.

Learning a New Language May Help Delay Dementia

Any time people take on the challenge of learning a new language, it takes commitment.  They must not only use some basic memorization but also have some kind of interaction.  This may simply be with a program.  Either way, learning a new language has much to offer for those who dare to try.  With people living longer today, there seems to be more cases of dementia.  It is a common occurrence among older individuals.  According to studies, those who speak more than one language are able to be somewhat insulated from the effects of dementia, having onset several years later than average

Speaking More Languages May Sharpen Hearing

On the surface, it may appear a bit strange for there to be a connection between hearing and language.  The truth is that good hearing may well be required in order for someone to accurately listen in another language.  Understanding exactly what is being said, and how, may be critical parts of determining meaning.  It is believed that the brain must work harder to sort through the sounds and what is intended.

We May As Well Grow in Culture as Well as Health

When we have an opportunity to learn something as useful as a new language, we may as well do so, especially if we can enjoy better health by doing so.  I try to do all I can to improve myself.  I undoubtedly have plenty to improve on.  I have been trying to improve my language skills by studying and practicing another language.  If this can help improve my hearing, I will be much better off.  If it can help prevent dementia, I will feel as if I have done a good job of preserving myself.
