3 Foods Packing Both Flavor and Health
By Genevieve Cunningham
When many people think of eating a healthy diet, they imagine really boring foods. Things that are all but tasteless -- lettuce, cauliflower, celery -- these are the things that come to mind. No wonder so many people skip the healthy eating. We want flavor! Luckily, you don’t have to choose between a balanced diet and flavor; you just have to know where to start. To get you going in the right direction, take a look at these three delicious foods that come packed with both flavor and healthy benefits.
Peppers
Bell peppers, chili peppers, cayenne … almost every pepper is really good for you. And of course, peppers have so much flavor! The milder versions -- bell pepper, for example -- have ample amounts of Vitamin C and give the body a boost in the immune system. The hotter varieties -- chili, cayenne -- can provide Vitamin C, and they can also get the metabolism moving. If you’re looking for flavor and health at the same time, peppers are a great place to start.
Onion
Another strong flavored food, the onion, can give the body a serious boost. Onions provide you with Vitamin C and potassium, and yet they remain extremely low calorie. Onions also work to boost the immune system, fight off illness, reduce inflammation in the body, and reduce the time of a cold. Generally speaking, you can choose whichever onion you like best and still reap the benefits. Green, white, yellow, and purple -- all bring their own round of healthy benefits to the table along with a nice kick of flavor.
Berries
Now for something sweet! If you have a sweet tooth to satisfy, look no further than a handful of berries. Berries have antioxidants that protect cell production and function. They also give the body another blast of Vitamin C, which is so important for the immune system and for fighting off those pesky germs. Strawberries, blueberries, blackberries, raspberries. Almost all berries are created equal when it comes to health, so pick your favorite, and enjoy to your heart’s content.
Who said eating healthy has to be boring or tasteless? You can definitely have the best of both worlds. Use these foods to get more flavor and better health all in one. Your diet will be delicious and, before you know it, your health will be better than ever.
