How to Get the Core of Your Dreams

By Genevieve Cunningham

The core is one of the most important parts of our bodies. Along with affecting appearance, the core is also crucial for overall body strength. When the core is weak, multiple other areas of our bodies can suffer. We may not be able to reach our full potential when it comes to certain athletic feats. We may not be able to carry out certain tasks or really reach our full potential. A strong core is critical for both overall physical condition, general strength, and making us feel good about our appearance. But how do we really get the core we've always dreamed of? If it was an easy task, we'd all be walking around with six-packs, right? If you're ready to tackle the core, take a look at these two important tips to help you find success.

You Have to Build Some Muscle

The core -- which includes the abdomen, sides, and back -- is full of muscle. Even though most people can't actually see the muscles on their stomachs, those muscles are present deep within the core. And these muscles need to be challenged if we want them to grow. So how do we challenge the core muscles? We have a few options. The most obvious way to work the core muscles is through sit-ups and crunches. These target the abdominal muscles and help build strength. Perhaps even more effective forms of exercise would include: leg lifts, plank holds, bar drills, and mountain climbers. If you need help with form, ideas, or how-to, do a quick internet search for an instructional video to get you started.

You Have to Burn Fat

While it's obviously important to build strong ab muscles, no one will ever see them if we have too much fat on top. To get the more chiseled look, we have to burn the fat away. But how do we do this? By burning more calories than we consume and lowering overall fat percentage on the body. This can be done through consistent cardio -- things like running, dance, aerobics, etc. High intensity interval training has also been proven to be effective at fat burning. If you want to hasten the burn or make it even more effective, you can also add weight training to your schedule. However you choose to burn fat, make sure you stick with it to see results.

Getting the core of your dreams takes work -- hard work! But living your life with a strong core is definitely worth it. Use these tips to engage and strengthen the core every day. With some effort, a plan, and a little patience, you'll be enjoying a core to be proud of in no time at all.
