3 Reasons to Try Crossfit (and 3 Reasons Not To!)

By Genevieve Cunningham

Crossfit is a hot topic in the fitness world. Some people absolutely swear by this method. Others aren’t necessarily convinced. So what’s the truth? Is it a workout worth exploring? The truth is that it’s entirely dependent on you and your personal preferences. If you’ve been thinking of checking out the nearest Crossfit box, take a look at these reasons to try it, and a few other reasons to skip it.

  • You want a real challenge - Crossfit is hard. It’s an hourlong workout that incorporates weights, cardio, and strength training. It’s hard, and you’ll sweat. If you like this kind of challenge, then Crossfit might really be for you, but be ready to work and be sore following your first workout.

  • You like diversity - One of the things that people like about Crossfit is that it keeps things interesting. You do a lot of different moves within an hour, and for some, this makes the time pass faster. If you like things to change, Crossfit is a good option. You’ll do enough of the same moves to feel comfortable, but it’s different enough to keep it interesting.

  • You need a team - Crossfit is all about the team. If you need motivation, Crossfit definitely provides it. Between the coach and the fellow participants, you’ll get plenty of motivation. Be ready for people to push you on, and be ready to push others on as well.

3 Reasons That Won’t Cut It

While Crossfit is a great workout, it’s not for everyone. If you want to give it a try, make sure none of these are your motivating factor, and if they are, you may want to try something else.

  • It’s popular - Crossfit has a serious following, but if you want to try it for the bandwagon factor, don’t. It’s tough, and wanting to be a part of the crowd is not enough motivation to keep you going through the grueling workouts.

  • You think it’s a miracle workout - Your buddy tried Crossfit, and the next time you saw him, he was really fit! That might be true, but Crossfit is not a miracle workout. It’s hard, and it takes time and effort to see results. If you’re thinking of joining a box to drop weight fast, you might reconsider. If you’re willing to work and wait, then you might give it a try.

  • You like a relaxed atmosphere - Some Crossfit gyms are relaxed … until the workout begins. Once the actual exercise routine begins, there’s a lot of push, push, push. The people might be relaxed and friendly, but the workout is intense. If you like a more relaxed approach, check out the nearest traditional gym instead.

Should you try Crossfit? It won’t hurt anything. And many gyms offer a class or two for free to let you decide. But do your homework and be prepared. With the right mindframe, you can make whatever exercise you choose work for you to help you get fit and healthy for a lifetime.
